4 Questions to Ask When Shopping for Dental Implants

November 4, 2017

Smiling senior man in dental chairWhen it comes to replacing missing teeth with dental implants, the first question people ask their dentist is, “How much will it cost?” This is an essential question, but before you get the answer, there are a few other questions that are more important for you to hear the answers to. Read this post to learn some of the questions you need to ask your dentist when shopping for the best deal on dental implants.

1 – What is Your Training?

General dentists can perform dental implant placement. Every dentist receives the basic training necessary at some point during their doctoral studies in dentistry. However, without further training, not every general dentist will be fully prepared to handle potential concerns that may arise during treatment. Ask your dentist what advanced training they’ve had in dental implant placement to ensure you have the highest chance for a successful procedure.

2 – What Experience do You Have?

Even if your dentist is well trained, if they never put the training to work on actual cases, it won’t do you much good. Ask both how many procedures they’ve performed and how often they perform dental implant placement. You may also want to ask about photos or testimonials from patients who have successfully completed implant placement with your dentist.

3 – Do You Perform the Implant Placement & Restoration?

Some general dentistry offices only perform restorations of dental implants. That means you’ll have to work with a specialist for the surgical placement of the implant posts. This can be a great situation if your dentist works regularly with the specialist to ensure a seamless transition. However, there can also be difficulties associated with this process, especially concerning dental insurance coverage. Make sure to discuss all aspects of the process with your dentist before agreeing to a specific implant supported tooth replacement plan.

4 – How Much Will My Treatment Cost?

Yes. You should still ask this question. It’s important to understand and plan for the out of pocket costs of your dental implant placement and restoration. Every patient and treatment is unique, but for a single dental implant and restoration, patients usually pay between $2500 and $3500. Talk to your dentist about the cost of your treatment plan, any available dental insurance coverage, and options for paying for the out of pocket portions of your implant placement and restoration.
